Walk-In Running Warm? It Is Rarely the Compressor First

A warm walk-in has a clock on it, so here is the honest order of what we find when we open the box, from our own service history.

The Facts

Walk-In Not Cooling

What It Usually Is

  • Evaporator coil iced over: a defrost heater, timer, or sensor failed, and the ice blocks airflow.
  • Evaporator fan motor dead or a blade broken: cold air is being made but not moved.
  • Run capacitor or start components failed on the condensing unit: the compressor hums, overheats, and trips.
  • Low refrigerant from a leak: the box cools slowly and never reaches temperature.
  • Condensing unit coil packed with dirt or lint: head pressure climbs, the unit runs hot and cuts out.

Check This First

  • Open the box: are the evaporator fans turning? Is the coil iced?
  • Go to the condensing unit: is the compressor running, humming, or silent? Is the coil dirty?
  • Read the thermometer and write down the time. Climbing fast means airflow; slow means charge or capacity.
  • Text a photo of the evaporator and the condensing unit to 601-337-1069. It often tells us the part before we roll.

When To Call

  • Product is above 41°F in a cooler or thawing in a freezer.
  • The compressor is humming or clicking but not running.
  • The coil is iced solid, or the fans are not turning.

What the Repair Usually Costs

Fan motors, capacitors, and defrost components are typical-range walk-in repairs. A refrigerant leak depends on where it is. A compressor is the complex range, and we say so with the replacement number next to it. Ranges from our own invoices are on the walk-in cooler repair cost page.

The diagnostic visit turns that range into a number for your unit, and you approve the number before any repair happens.

Common Questions

Walk-In Not Cooling FAQ

Should I turn the walk-in off if it is iced?

Turning it off lets the coil thaw, which can get you through a shift, but the ice will come back until the defrost problem is fixed. Keep the door closed and call.

How fast can you get here?

Warm walk-ins get priority because product loss has a clock on it. Text 601-337-1069 with the temperature and your address.

Is it worth repairing an old walk-in?

Usually yes: most warm-box calls are typical-range parts. If the compressor has failed on an old condensing unit, we show you the replacement number next to the repair number.
