Fryer Says "Drain Open" With the Drain Closed

The fryer will not heat because a safety switch says the drain valve is open or the drain pan is out. When both are clearly fine, the switch itself is the problem. From a case in our own history.

Fryer Drain Open Error

What It Usually Is

  • Drain valve microswitch sticking internally: the valve is closed, the switch never sees it.
  • Drain pan switch not detecting the pan: the pan is in, the switch or its magnet is out of position or failed.
  • Drain valve not fully closed because of debris in the valve seat.
  • Harness or connector damage from heat and oil near the switches.

Check This First

  • Is the drain valve handle fully in the closed position? Cycle it open and closed once.
  • Is the drain pan pushed all the way in and seated?
  • Does the error clear for a moment when you press on the pan or the valve handle? That points at the switch.

When To Call

  • The error stays with the pan seated and the valve closed.
  • The fryer heats intermittently and drops out.

Fryer Drain Open Error FAQ

Can I bypass the switch to get through a shift?

No. It is the interlock that keeps the elements from running in an empty vat. We carry the switches and can usually fix it in one visit.

Why do both switches get replaced?

They live in the same hot, oily space and fail the same way. Replacing both while the fryer is apart avoids a second visit a month later.
