The Facts

Ice Machine Not Making Ice

What It Usually Is

  • Unit switched off or in clean mode. It happens more than anyone admits, usually after a cleaning or a power blip.
  • Bin or curtain switch not closing: the machine thinks the bin is full and never starts a cycle.
  • Water inlet valve not opening, or float and water-level sensor fouled: power is there, water is there, the valve is not passing it.
  • Scale on the evaporator plate from hard water: ice forms thin, sticks, and harvest fails or takes forever.
  • Condenser coil dirty or airflow blocked: the machine overheats and shuts down on a hot afternoon.
  • Harvest or thermistor sensor failed, or a control board, which is the expensive end.

Check This First

  • Is the power switch on and the display out of clean mode?
  • Lift the curtain or check the bin: does the switch click? Is the bin actually full of stale ice?
  • Is water flowing into the reservoir when a cycle starts?
  • Look at the evaporator plate: white scale means a cleaning is overdue.
  • Is the condenser coil visibly dirty, or is the machine boxed in with no airflow?

When To Call

  • No ice after you have confirmed power, water, and the bin switch.
  • Ice is thin, cloudy, or the machine harvests every cycle but produces little.
  • The machine shuts down in the afternoon and restarts when it cools.

What the Repair Usually Costs

Bin switches, water valves, and cleanings are the low end of the ice machine range. Sensors and pumps are mid-range. A control board or compressor is the complex end. Ranges from our own invoices are on the ice machine repair cost page.

The diagnostic visit turns that range into a number for your unit, and you approve the number before any repair happens.

Common Questions

Ice Machine Not Making Ice FAQ

How often should a commercial ice machine be cleaned?

On the manufacturer's interval, usually twice a year and more often on hard water or heavy use. Most emergency ice calls we run trace back to a cleaning nobody was doing.

The machine makes ice but not enough. Is that expensive?

Usually not. Scale, a dirty condenser, or a water supply problem cause most low-production calls, and those are typical-range fixes.

Do you service my brand?

We service the common commercial brands and keep the documentation for them. Text the model on the nameplate and we can usually bring the part.
