Compressor Starts, Then Shuts Off

The machine hums, the compressor kicks on, runs a few seconds, and drops out on its internal overload. On the machines we service that is start components far more often than a dead compressor.

The Facts

Soft-Serve Compressor Shuts Off

What It Usually Is

  • Start relay, start capacitor, or run capacitor failed: the compressor cannot get up to speed and trips on overload.
  • Condenser coil packed with dust and syrup: the compressor overheats and cuts out, then restarts when it cools.
  • Low or high refrigerant charge, or a restriction, holding pressures out of range.
  • Compressor winding failure, which is the expensive end and the minority case.
  • A beater motor or drive problem that looks like a refrigeration fault from the front.

Check This First

  • Is the condenser coil clean? On these machines it is usually behind a side or rear panel.
  • Does the compressor try to start (hum, click) or do nothing at all?
  • Is the machine in a corner with no airflow, or next to a fryer?
  • Which side of a two-barrel machine is failing?

When To Call

  • The machine will not freeze product and the compressor is cycling.
  • You hear a click every few minutes from the back.

What the Repair Usually Costs

Start components and a coil cleaning are typical-range repairs for soft-serve and slush machines. A compressor replacement, with the filter drier and pressure switch that go with it, is the complex range. Ranges from our own invoices are on the repair cost page.

The diagnostic visit turns that range into a number for your unit, and you approve the number before any repair happens.

Common Questions

Soft-Serve Compressor Shuts Off FAQ

Is it worth fixing an old slush machine compressor?

If the rest of the machine is sound, often yes. We quote the compressor job next to a replacement so you can decide.

Why do these machines fail more than a reach-in?

They run a hard duty cycle in a hot kitchen, the condensers clog with airborne sugar and dust, and the start components take the punishment first.

Do you carry parts for the common brands?

Yes, and the service documentation. Text the model on the nameplate.
